DUBUQUE, Iowa – Jd Bombshell from the Stidham Racing, L.L.C. Kennel put on an impressive performance on Monday, July 4, in winning the $30,000 King & Queen Stakes at Iowa Greyhound Park.

Bombshell, a 62-pounder born Sept. 25, 2013 out of KC And All – Jd Forever, had gone to the starting boxes fully supported by the patrons as the $1.90 - $1 favorite. But inside the kennel there were worries.

“She was in the eight box,” explained owner Jon Stidham. “She prefers the inside. She has won eight of 10 races here and the two losses have come when she was in the eight box.”

The kennel didn’t breathe any easier when Bombshell broke only fifth. Add to the concern was AJ’s Callie (Jackson Greyhounds) broke on top out of the four box. Callie, the track’s defending Iowa Breeders Cup champion, “is a real closer,” said Stidham.

Jd Bombshell made up for her break with a great run to the first turn, pushing past the field to easily take the lead entering into the first turn.

Once in front Bombshell exploded, by late in the backstretch she led AJ’s Callie by seven lengths.

“We felt she needed to be five lengths in front of four (Callie),” said Stidham. “When she got that, we felt she was tough enough in front.”

The trip to the finish line proved just for the record.

“She is a good greyhound,” said Stidham. “She ran in Grade A last year at Bluffs Run. She did not like Southland but did well enough in Florida. We got her back up here and (trainer) Alicia (Bushey) has done a nice job with her.”

The win also allowed Stidham to win the race within the race as the kennel and Jackson Greyhounds each had three entries in the field.

“Jd Dignity, 10-4-2-2, ran a big race for us (in finishing fourth),” said Stidham. “To get first and fourth is really good.”

Jd Spark Plug, 10-4-2-0, finished fifth for Stidham.

AJ’s Callie, 11-2-3-2, closed a bit to finish second, two and a half lengths back, to top the Jackson Greyhound trio.

“Callie got into a bit of trouble in the first turn,” said Michael Jackson of Jackson Greyhounds, “but she ran her race and did very well. Bombshell is just a nice greyhound.

Also for Jackson Tahas Tornado, 11-3-1-2, was sixth and Slatex Elvis, 6-1-0-1, was seventh.

Oya Pawtycrasher (Ward), 11-5-2-1, last at one point, put on a big rally to take third. Pawtycrasher had topped the Kings in points after the three qualifying rounds.

Super C Butterum (Superior), 9-4-1-1, faded to last place.

    For the patrons, Jd Bombshell paid $5.80, $3.20 and $2.80. AJ’s Callie paid $5.00 and $3.20. Oya Pawtycrasher paid $3.00. The 4-8 quiniela paid $48.20. The 8-4-1 tri-box paid $95.40. The 8-4-1-7 .10 cent superfecta paid $38.16. The 7-8-8 $1 pick 3 paid $65.20.

The victory by Jd Bombshell broke a tie in the King & Queen Stakes. In the 31 years of the Stakes, the Queens have won 16 times and the Kings have won 15 times..
