Greyhound Racing 2015 $135,000 Iowa Breeders Cup Stakes at IGP

DUBUQUE, Iowa – AJ’s Callie ignored a tightly bunch field of rivals behind her and raced off to a three-length triumph in the 2015 $135,000 Iowa Breeders Cup Stakes at Iowa Greyhound Park on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Callie broke fifth from the one box and led by a length in the early going before pulling away late. The triumph was in sharp contrast for the 57-pounder, born June 3, 2013 out of Pat C Clement – Uss Cool Choice, to her fourth round effort in the qualifiers. There a first turn collision sent her to last-place finish.

“She had her hole,” explained Jackson Greyhound trainer Jack Shaver about the qualifier, “but she got shut off early.”

In the championship race, with IGP Greyhound of the Year Wild Bill Reeves coming out of the seven box, AJ’s Callie wasn’t giving much notice and Shaver wasn’t too surprised at that.

“Nobody gave her a shot,” Shaver said, “mostly because she runs mid track and wide. But take a closer look at her lines; she has won out of the one and two boxes.”

Besides, with the exception of the fourth round collision “she has been running well of late,” Shaver said. “Now she is not going to come from behind but with the lead she is a better greyhound than not.”

And when it counted the most AJ’s Callie, 29-7-4-3, was a better greyhound.

“This is the first Iowa Breeders win for (co-owner) Jeff Junk,” pointed out Shaver. “He is so happy.”

The other seven greyhounds finished in a bunch. While three lengths separated Callie from runner-up Go Lucky Darla (Black), 22-9-4-2, only two lengths separated Darla from the last-place finisher.

Third went to Bs Rebel (Copper Kettle), 32-8-6-4, a half length out of second. Rebel had a nice rally after running sixth early on.

The longshot in the field ($12.30 on the dollar) Pg Sudden Impact (XTREM Racing), 31-9-4-7, was fourth, four lengths back.

Another half-length back was Superior Canard (Superior), 27-7-8-4, who faded just a bit at the finish.

Sixth was XKT Dave Turin (XTREM Racing), 17-4-3-3, who rallied a bit late. Seventh was XK Thisones Foru (XTREM Racing), 20-6-4-7, who faded late.

That left Wild Bill Reeves (Copper Kettle), 26-12-1-5, in last place as the major disappointment in the final. Reeves, the IGP’s Greyhound of the Year, broke seventh and simple did not respond.

For the patrons, AJ’s Callie paid $13.20, $6.20 and $4.80; Go Lucky Darla paid $5.60 and $4.20 and Bs Rebel paid $6.20.

    The 1-2 quiniela paid $31.80; the 1-2-5 tri box paid $321.10; the 1-2-5-3 .10 superfecta paid $135.60 and the 4-5-1 $1 pic 3 paid $99.70.
