Greyhound Racing 2015 IGP AU Revior by Steve Sigafoose

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Jackson Greyhounds trainer Jack Shaver was almost in a daze after the final race on the Saturday, Oct. 24, program at the Iowa Greyhound Park.

In a sport that enjoys its exotic wagering this is some kind of trifecta.

First the kennel wins the Secretary’s Choice with Slatex Elvis; then hits the big one, winning the $135,000 Iowa Breeders Cup Stakes with AJ’s Callie and then finishes off the trifecta by winning the Au Revoir Stakes with Ms Makenna.

“You can’t beat a day like this,” said Shaver. “We all come to work and do our jobs. (Kennel owner) Mike Jackson is a great guy to work for and you hope to get the good draws for your greyhounds.”

Speaking of draws “I thought it was great when Ms Makenna drew the two box (for the Au Revoir,” said Shaver.

Makenna, a 56 pounder, born May 6, 2013 out of Rhythmless – Sugar Foot Drive, had been running in the 5-16 mile races, but Shave had nominated her for this Dubuque course (just a hair short of a 3-8 mile test) race.

“She is better at the 3-8 distance,” Shaver said, “and she is real tough on the lead.”

The lead is exactly what Ms Makenna got very early on. She was out to a comfortable margin and cruised to a three-length decision.

“(With that lead) I wasn’t worried about anybody behind her,” Shaver admitted. “I simply didn’t feel anyone would beat her in that race.”

With the stakes, Ms Makenna finished the 2015 season at IGP with a 29-6-7-3 record.

UB Luscious Lu (XTREM Racing), 17-4-1-1, broke fifth and rallied a bit to take second, a length and a half ahead of Boc’s Trucker (Boeckenstedt), 26-3-2-4.

There was a gap to the favorite, O Ya Sweet Annie (Superior), 13-2-3-2, who finished fourth but nine lengths back.

Pat C Rap Rap (Collins – Schmidt), 27-4-3-2, nipped Princess Maddy (Copper Kettle), 23-4-2-2, in the battle for fifth place, three lengths out of fourth and a length ahead of Roc a By Shu Box (Jackson Greyhounds), 27-5-2-4.

That left Boc’s Billy Bob (Boeckenstedt), 26-2-5-4, to complete the field.

Ms Makenna paid $8.20, $4.20 and $3.60; Ub Luscious Lu paid $7.20 and $6.00 and Bob’s Trucker paid $5.00.

The 2-3 quiniela paid $24.20; the 2-3-1 tri box paid $74.20 and the 2-3-1-7 .10 superfecta paid $68.65.
