The Boeckenstedt Kennel heavyweights filled half of the spots in the championship field for the 30th edition of the $500,000 Iowa Breeders Classic after the dust had settled following the semifinal races at Bluffs Run on Saturday, Oct. 24.

But, hey, those other four greyhounds in the final are pretty good too.

The power of the Boeckenstedt Kennel was demonstrated in the middle of the three semifinal races when the kennelís entries ran one-two-three, sending all three into the final.

Bocís Sailfish, 42-18-9-7, took the race with an explosive finish, winning by nine and a half lengths. That gave Sailfish bookend victories in the four qualifying rounds and a total of 48 points, third best on the point list.

Breaking last but pushing throughout the field to take second was Bocís Gasguzzier, 45-13-12-6. Gasguzzier finished as the top points earner at 50 with two early wins then two seconds.

The veteran Bocís John Luke, 28-8-3-3, stepped back late in finishing third. Luke, who is four years old, is the surprise of the final. His first round fourth place finish dropped him to Grade B but he found a touch of youth to produce a pair of wins and now this third for a total of 44 points, good for fifth on the list.

However, the other two semifinal races saw Boeckenstedt greyhounds being beaten.

In the first semifinal, Helpme Helpyou (Seastrom Ė Lovely) overtook Bocís Hank Jr and pulled away for a three-length decision. That is the third straight win for Helpme Helpyou, 31-13-3-2, who started the qualifying with a fifth place effort. He finished with 49 points, good for second on the points list.

Bocís Hank Jr, 39-22-5-6, finished second and that gave him enough points for a total of 43, good for a tie for seventh on the list and a spot in the field. Wins in the first two rounds got Hank going in the right direction.

The third semifinal went to Enjoying Life (Plum Creek), 24-7-6-2, who went box-to-wire from the six box to win by three lengths. It was the second win in the qualifiers for Life and gave her 46 points, good for fourth on the list.

Blocked and cutoff before a rally gave him second was Bocís Tony Romo. But the $60,000 Open champion needed a win to get into the final and he finished with 39 points, making him the best of the non-qualifiers.

Rounding out the field were two greyhounds that had enough in the bank to survive not too good semifinal efforts.

Jd Debutante gave Seastrom Ė Lovely a second finalist with a fourth place finish. That gave Debutante, 49-9-3-8, 43.5 points, good for sixth on the list.

No Big Deal (Hardison), 47-16-8-5, wasnít a big deal in the semifinal, finishing sixth. The three points earned gave him 43 good for a tie for seventh and the final spot in the championship run.

For the record, the race is mostly a guy thing; Enjoying Life and Jd Debutante are the only females in the final.
