The stars rose up on several fronts in the first round of the 30th $500,000 Iowa Breeders Classic at Bluffs Run on Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Any questions that may have lingered over Bocís Hank Jrís conditions were answered by the pupís impressive six-length victory in his first-round effort. Boeckenstedt Kennel trainer Philip Stapleton had promised that only a completely well Hank would run and that is who showed up. Hank Jr moves into the second round with a 36-21-4-6 record.

Two-time stakes champion at Bluffs Run in 2015, Bocís Sailfish (Boeckenstedt) came out running to take his first-round race by a nice four lengths. Sailfish, 39-17-8-6, could easily seal Greyhound of the Year laurels with a third stakes title here.

Another 2015 stakes champion, Bocís Gasguzzier (Boeckenstedt) came out sizzling. He posted a sparking time of 29.96 seconds for the 5-16 mile course in winning by an impressive seven lengths. Gasguzzier moves to the second round with a 42-12-10-6 record.

The most impressive first-round win was turned in by Bocís Red Neck (Boeckenstedt) in the dayís first race. Red Neck, 42-11-3-7, went box-to-wire from the four box to win by nine and a half lengths in a time of 29.80 seconds. Both the margin of victory and the time were bests for the first round. Left a distant second was Bocís Executive (Boeckenstedt), 43-15-10-4, a third place finisher in the $60,000 Juvenile.

In the second race of the first round, Superior Phoenix (Harlan Brothers), 32-10-4-2, a finalist in the recent $60,000 Finale, won by a length and a half. Blocked early was big finisher Bocís Tony Romo (Boeckenstedt), 42-20-5-7. Romo was able to rally to take third, two lengths off the pace. Another finalist in the $60,000 Finale, No Big Deal (Hardison), 44-15-7-5, came up with a solid four length victory.

Two greyhounds, both from the Hardison Kennel, surprised the patrons by coming home as 17-1 longshots.

Auto Tune, 38-9-3-2, broke second and ran away nicely for a six-length victory from the four box. He paid $35.40 for the $2 win ticket.

Lahaina, 41-8-5-5, outduel Enjoying Life (Plum Creek), 21-5-6-2, to win by a head. Dealt a troubled path and finishing seventh was the $60,000 Juvenile champion Half Way There (Black), 38-10-7-5.

    In the other first-round races:

Bocís Left Wing (Boeckenstedt), 34-4-4-9, won by four lengths. Hilco Kain (Bean & Stout), 14-2-3-2, rallied late to win by two lengths. XKT Fred Dodge (Keeper-Red Rock), 24-6-5-3 won by three lengths. Deja Vue (Filipelli/Miner), 41-10-5-8, went box-to-wire from the five box to win by two and a half lengths.

By the kennels, Boeckenstedt produced five winners and Hardison had three with four other kennels getting one winner each. And for those counting, 10 males and two females won.

The entire field returns to action for the second round on Saturday, Oct. 17, after which the field will be sliced to 48 greyhounds for the Wednesday, Oct. 21, quarterfinals.
