Greyhound Racing The championship race for the $60,000 Finale at Bluffs Run by Steve Sigafoose

Last year Boc’s John Luke used a pair of stakes wins at Bluffs Run to propel him to the track’s Greyhound of the Year honor.

Can two stakes wins do the same for Boc’s Sailfish in 2015?

Sailfish won the $60,000 Secretary’s Choice in May and on Saturday, Sept. 26, added the $60,000 Finale trophy to the shelf over this kennel.

“I don’t know if he will be the Greyhound of the Year,” said Boeckenstedt Kennel trainer Phil Stapleton. “He is a pretty nice greyhound.”

This was a solid performance for the 70-pounder, born July 31, 2012 out of Djays Octane – Boc’s Raisen. A decent breaker, Sailfish drew the four box which meant to Stapleton “he had to get out. He won his last stakes from the outside (the eight box), but he likes the inside.”

Boc’s Sailfish did the job, breaking second behind Ds Sip N Si (Bean & Stout). The pair battle through the front stretch before Sailfish took the lead rounding the first turn.

“He got out,” said Stapleton, “and did what he had to do.”

Entering the backstretch, Boc’s Sailfish was in charge and “when he’s top,” said Stapleton, “I had no concern. In fact, my biggest concern was (kennelmate) Boc’s Gasguzzier.”

Ah, Gasguzzier, who won the $60,000 3-8 Mile Derby in April, was in the one box and was sent off by the Bluffs Run patrons as the 2-1 favorite.

But Boc’s Gasguzzier, an average breaker, broke “very poorly,” said Stapleton. “He missed the break completely.”

Several steps behind the field early in the frontstretch, Boc’s Gasguzzier found a way to weave through the field to the point, that, by early in the backstretch, Gasguzzier was in third place.

In the homestretch, Boc’s Sailfish, 37-15-8-6, never missed a step in rolling to a two-length decision in a time of 30.09 seconds for the 5-16 mile that was easily the day’s best.

Boc’s Gasguzzier, 40-11-10-6, kept charging and passed Ds Sip N Si in the final few strides to take second place.

“The break hurt him,” said Stapleton, “but he made up for it with a big finish.”

That left Ds Sip N Sid, 35-12-10-1, settling for third.

The championship race proved a three-greyhound affair. Helpme Helpyou (Seastrom-Lovely), 25-9-3-2, was cut off then rallied for fourth but was nine lengths off the pace.

Superior Phoenix (Harlan Brothers), 30-7-5-5, stepped back just a bit late to finish fifth, a half length behind fourth.

Two lengths back in sixth was No Big Deal (Hardison), 42-14-6-5, who had broke third out of the boxes.

JD Iconic (Seastrom-Lovely), 29-8-4-2, had too much trouble and finished seventh, leaving Illuminate (Filipelli/Miner), 43-10-7-12, who was sent off by the patrons as the 10-1 longshot, in eighth, 13 and a half lengths back.

As for the purse, Boc’s Sailfish earned $30,000; Boc’s Gasguzzier $15,000; Ds Sip N Si earned $6,000; Helpme Helpyou earned $3,000 and the fifth through eighth place finishers earned $1,500 each.
