Greyhound Racing The semifinal round for the $60,000 Finale by Steve Sigafoose

Most times the leaders of the quarterfinals in the stakes qualifying at Bluffs Run would advance though the semifinals into the championship race.

Wednesday, Sept. 23, was not most times as the three semifinal races for the $60,000 Finale left the boxes.

Three greyhounds apparently in were left out replaced by three who used semifinal wins to secure spots in the championship race.

One greyhound never got a chance. Bluffs Run wins leader Bocís Hank Jr (Boeckenstedt) was a scratch, eliminating him from the Finale.

Dare Devil Devin (Black) tumbled from a tie for third to the first greyhound out because of a miserable seventh-place finish in his semifinal run.

Down Lo (Mickim) was seventh but was crowded early and left for last in the semifinal and finished with 34 points, five points away from the final.

Jumping from a tie for 13th to a tie for fourth was Bocís Sailfish, 36-14-8-6. Winner of the $60,000 Secretaryís Choice in May, Sailfish (Boeckenstedt) bounced back from a last-place finish in the quarterfinal with a three-length win in the semifinal. He finished the four qualifying rounds with 41 points.

Jumping from a tie for 10th to third with 42 points was JD Iconic (Seastrom-Lovely), 28-8-4-2. Iconic went box-to-wire from the four box to win his semifinal test by four lengths.

Going into the Finaleís championship race as the co-leading points earner from the qualifiers is another stakes winner from earlier in the season.

Bocís Gasguzzier (Boeckenstedt), 38-10-9-6, won Aprilís $60,000 3-8 Mile Derby. He got a second in the semifinal to finish with 44 points.

Joining Gasguzzier at the top was Superior Phoenix (Harlan Brothers), 29-7-5-5. Phoenix faded a bit in the semifinal but the fourth-place finish gave him the 44 point total to tie for the top spot.

Tied with Sailfish with 41 points is No Big Deal (Hardison), 41-14-6-5. Big Deal rallied in the semifinal for a fourth-place finish to secure his spot in the final.

Co-leader after the quarterfinals Illuminate (Filipelli/Miner), 42-10-7-12, had the poorest showing of any of the greyhounds making the final. Double trouble doomed him to a seventh-place finish in the semifinal but he still finished with 40 points, good for sixth in the final points standings.

Rounding out the title field is Ds Sip N Si (Bean & Stout), 33-12-10-0. He was eighth after the quarterfinals and tied for seventh after the semifinals as he finished a solid second in the semifinals for his 39 points.

The championship field is spread out with only the Boeckenstedt Kennel, with its pair of stakes winners, having more than one entry. For the statistics, it will be an all male race.

The championship race for the $60,000 Finale will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26.
