    Greyhound Racing quarterfinals of the $60,000 Finale Stakes at Bluffs Run by Steve Sigafoose

    After the quarterfinals of the $60,000 Finale Stakes at Bluffs Run no greyhound is perfect.

    The second round leader, Illuminate (Fillipelli/Miner), 41-10-7-12, broke on top in his quarterfinal race on Saturday, Sept. 19, but declined with a wide run and finished third. Still he is a co-leader on the points board with 38 points.

    Joining Illuminate at the top was Superior Phoenix (Harlan Brothers), 28-7-5-5. He went box-to-wire from the two box to win by three and a half lengths in the quarterfinal in a strong performance.

    Third in points with 36 is Dare Devil Devin (Black), 39-12-10-3. He rallied from third in the homestretch to win by a length in the quarterfinal that saw Illuminate finish third.

    A pair of interesting greyhounds is next with 35 points.

    Bluffs Runís victory leader Bocís Hank Jr (Boeckenstedt), 35-20-4-6, was bumped early and that left him chasing Superior Phoenix throughout as Hank finished second in the quarterfinal.

    No Big Deal (Hardison), 40-14-6-5, squeezed into second in the quarterfinal race between Dare Devil Devin and Illuminate.

    Rounding out the top eight are Bocís Gasguzzier (Boeckenstedt), Down Lo (Mickim) and DS Sip N Si (Bean & Stout).

    Gasguzzier, 37-10-8-6, the $60,000 3-8 Mile Derby champion from April, won his second straight qualifier, this one by six and a half lengths, and has 34 points.

    Down Lo, 10-4-3-1, with a second-place finish in the quarterfinal, has 33 points.

    DS Sip N Si, 32-12-9-0, led early in his quarterfinal but had far turn trouble and settled for fifth to leave him with 29 points.

    Lurking is Bocís Tony Romo (Boeckenstedt), 38-19-5-5. After a pair of fourths in the first two rounds, the $60,000 Open champion gave a Romo performance in the quarterfinal. He broke sixth then exploded in the homestretch to win by nine lengths in a time of 30.21 seconds for the 5-16 mile course. Both the margin of victory and time were bests for the six quarterfinal races. Tony Romo has 27 points and a win in the semifinals would give him 42 and a possible spot in the championship.

    There was quite a logjam for the final spots in the semifinals. Six greyhounds were tied for the last three spots. After the tie-breakers were considered, O Ya Spunky (Bartley Corporation), Driven Dreams (Mickim) and Call Me Later (Plum Creek) made the cut.

    The greyhounds quickly return to the track for the three semifinal races on Wednesday, Sept. 23. The championship race is Saturday, Sept. 26.

    The semifinalists (with kennel) and point totals:

    Illuminate (Fillipelli/Miner) 38; Superior Phoenix (Harlan Brothers) 38; Dare Devil Devin (Black) 36; Bocís Hank Jr (Boeckenstedt) 35; No Big Deal (Hardison) 35; Bocís Gasguzzier (Boeckenstedt) 34; Down Lo (Mickim) 33; DS Sip N Si (Bean & Stout) 29;
