Maybe the first greyhound to win two stakes championships at Bluffs Run in 2015 will be the trackís Greyhound of the Year. That was the path took last year when Bocís John Luke earned Greyhound of the Year laurels.

Now Bocís Sailfish might be making his bid for the yearly honor. The Boeckenstedt Kennel entry won the $60,000 Secretaryís Choice stakes in May. On Wednesday, September 9, the 70-pounder, born July 31, 2012 out of Djays Octane Ė Bocís Mc Raisen, led the charge in the first round of the $60,000 Finale.

Sailfish, 33-13-7-6, won the seventh races of the nine first-round performances with a box-to-wire run from the one box. His four and a half length margin and time of 30.11 seconds for the 5-16 mile course were both bests for the first round.

And Sailfish is running well. He was third in the $60,000 Open and has followed that effort with a 4-3-1-0 record.<{P>The Boeckenstedt Kennel had two winners in the first round. Bocís Executive, 37-14-8-4, took the sixth race by four lengths.

The Seastrom-Lovely Kennel also had two winners.

In the opening race, Helpme Helpyou, 21-8-3-2, matched Sailfish with a four and a half length win. JD Iconic, 25-7-4-2, broke on top in the eighth race, then regained the lead late to win by a length.

Bocís Tony Romo, 36-18-5-5, off his powerful win in the $60,000 Open, found trouble and finished fourth in the eighth race.

The other five opening race were won by different kennels.

In the second race, Trending (Hardison), 24-5-6-0, rallied in the homestretch to win by a length.

In the third race, Champís Conquest (Mickim), a Class B entry who came out of the boxes as the 21-1 longshot, rallied from fourth to win by two lengths. Conquest is 30-5-4-5.

In the fourth race, Dare Devil Deven (Black), 37-11-10-3, rallied from second in the homestretch to win by two lengths.

In the fifth race, 27-1 Superior Phoenix (Harlan Brothers), 27-6-5-4, went box-to-wire from the two box to win by four lengths.

It was an impressive triumph. Bocís Hank Jr (Boeckenstedt), 34-19-3-6, chased but had to settle for second. Barts Bold Ruler (Bartley Corporation), 42-17-8-3, faded to fourth.

In the ninth race, Illuminate (Filipelli/Miner), 39-9-7-11, roll on to a three-length victory.

The complete field will return to the track for the second round on Saturday, Sept. 12. After the second round, the field will be trimmed to the top 48 greyhounds for the Wednesday, Sept. 16, quarterfinals.
