DUBUQUE, Ia. – That two race non-winning streak the Copper Kettle Kennel’s Wild Bill Reeves was in did not fool the patrons at the Iowa Greyhound Park as the finalists of the $30,000 Dubuque Course Classic Stakes went to the boxes on Friday, Sept. 4.

Wild Bill Reeves went to the boxes as the favorite and came home as the champion, posting a three-length triumph in a time of 39.47 seconds for the Dubuque course.

“We thought he was the fastest in the race,” said co-owner David Ungs. “But there were good early speed greyhounds in the race that weren’t short.”

Wild Bill Reeves, a 74 pounder, born May 18, 2013 out of Flying Coal City – Kind Kelsey, was in good shape as he drew the seven box for the title run. “Those previous two races,” said Ungs, “he drew the one box. He got knocked around and cut off as he tried to get outside like he wanted. Even with all that trouble, he still had a second and a third in those races.”

Reeves broke fourth in the championship race and was fourth as the greyhounds entered the front stretch. His move into the front stretch was very wide but “he likes going around greyhounds,” said Ungs. “That’s his style, he has a nice pace and he doesn’t labor.”

Breaking from the one box Pat C Rap Rap (Collins – Schmidt) took the early lead and build an advantage that stretched out to four lengths at some points. Ms Makenna (Jackson Greyhounds) slipped into second place. Wild Bill Reeves moved into third place as the field entered the backstretch.

“When he got in third place,” Ungs said, “I felt the race was over.” As the field rounded the far turn, Reeves shifted gears and closed rapidly on Rap Rap. He passed the leader entering the homestretch and started pulling away for his stakes triumph.

With the triumph, Wild Bill Reeves moved to 16-7-1-5 for the 2015 IGP season.

“You gotta win,” Ungs said, “one once in a while.”

Ms Makenna, 20-4-5-3, rallied back from third to recapture second place.

Early leader Pat C Rap Rap, 18-3-2-2, settled for third place, four lengths back but a half-length ahead of O Ya Sweet Annie (Superior), 7-2-1-1.

Three lengths back or seven lengths off the pace in fifth place was Princess Maddy (Copper Kettle) 14-3-2-1. Boc’s Sydney (Boeckenstedt), 17-2-4-3, came up to take sixth place, 10 lengths back.

Rock A By Shu Box (Jackson Greyhounds), 18-5-1-2, faded to seventh place, 11 lengths back. That left Bs Greed (Copper Kettle), 21-2-5-6, who dropped to eighth early and finished 13 back.

For the Iowa Greyhound Park patrons, Wild Bill Reeves paid $6.00 $2.40 and $2.60. Ms Makenna paid $6.20 and $3.40. Pat C Rap Rap paid $8.60.

    The 7-8 Quiniela paid $20.20. The 7-8-1 Tri-Box paid $132.00. The 7-8-1-5 10 cents Superfecta paid $54.17. The 2-A-7 $1 Pick paid $5.00. The A-7-7 $1 Pick 3 paid $5.00.
