Hereís a look at the first round where eight greyhounds got a leg up with victories.

In the first race, XK Bone Crusher (Keeper-Red Rock), 25-6-2-4, the patronsí favorite, came from second in the homestretch to win by two lengths.

In the second race, XKT Jim Thurber (Keeper-Red Rock), 11-4-2-0, was a mild surprise. A 6-1 shot, Thurber won by a length.

In the third race, Blink It (Black), 13-4-2-1, the favorite, won pulling away by three lengths.

In the fourth race, Barts Bold Ruler (Bartley Corporation), 27-10-5-2, one of the pre-Stakes favorites, showed why. His six-length win was the biggest margin of victory in the first round. Breaking from the eight box, he paid only $3.00 for the win.

The biggest surprise came in the fifth race. Keeper Ispent It (Keeper-Red Rock), 17-5-2-1 paid $21.00 to win as he pulled away for a three and a half length decision.

In the sixth race, Half Way There (Black), 16-6-3-1 beat Dare Devil Deven (Black) 21-6-6-2 by two lengths in a battle of kennelmates.

In the seventh race, Bocís Executive (Boeckenstedt) 25-10-4-2 won by two lengths over the heavy favorite Helpme Helpyou (Seastrom-Lovely) 16-7-2-2, who it was suspected would be helped by breaking from the one box.

In the eighth and final race of the first round, Bocís Red Neck (Boeckenstedt) 24-8-1-1, broke sixth from the three box but kept working to rally from third in the homestretch for a three and a half length win.

To sum up, Keeper-Red Rock had three winners while Black and Boeckenstedt had two winners each.

The field of 64 greyhounds returns to action for the second round on Saturday, June 20. After the second round, the field will be slightly trimmed to 48 for the Wednesday, June 24, quarterfinals.
