A wild semifinal round highlighted the $60,000 3-8 Mile Derby at Bluffs Run on Saturday, May 17, did, when the dust had finally settled after the three races, what it was supposed to do – set the field for the championship race.

However, the field was so balanced that half of the finalists didn’t have to reach the 40 point total usually needed to get into a championship field at Bluffs Run.

The field came down to basically two kennels with four finalists coming from the Black Kennel and three from Plum Creek.

Makin A Scene lived up to his name by vaulting from a tie for 16th in the points race after the quarterfinals with his semifinal win. Making A Scene, an 80-pounder, born Nov. 4, 2011, out of Bluffs Run Hall of Famer KC And All – Share The Glory, came out of the three box and went box-to-wire to win by a half length. The 15 points gave Makin A Scene, 25-5-4-3, 37 points, good enough for sixth best on the final qualifying list.

The greyhound with the most qualifying points gave the most impressive performance in the semifinals. Boc’s C U Again, the “outsider” so to speak from the Boeckenstedt Kennel, broke fifth from the eight box, then exploded in the homestretch to win by 10 lengths in a time of 39.02 seconds, easily the fastest of the three semifinals. Boc’s C U Again, a 71-pounder, born Oct. 11, 2011, out of Djays Octane Dam – Ucme By A Mile, moves to 20-10-3-2. He started The Derby as the greyhound with the most wins in the field and still holds that honor.

Second in points is A Frosted Life (Black), 23-3-6-5, who finished second to Makin A Scene in their semifinal. A Frosted Life finished with 45 points based on a win and three seconds.

The leader after the quarterfinals, Cadillac Otis (Black), 17-9-3-1, broke poorly and had to rally late for a fifth-place finish in the semifinal. Otis tied for third in points with 44.

Also with 44 points is Takenitalltheway (Plum Creek), 21-6-3-2, who won the first semifinal with a box-to-wire effort by two lengths from the one box. Like Otis, Takenitalltheway had a pair of victories in the qualifying rounds.

Go Lucky Ashlee (Black), 21-5-4-5, was third in points after the quarterfinals. She rallied after dealing with early traffic for a fourth in the semifinal to finish with 39 points. Following Makin A Scene’s 37 points, there was a three-way tie with 36 points for the final two spots in the championship race.

Epic Revolution (Plum Creek), 22-5-2-2, got the first tie-breaker by winning in the first two rounds. A seventh in the quarterfinals and a fifth in the semifinals, admittedly both efforts filled with trouble, leaves concerns about Epic Revolution’s chances in a championship field.

Splish Splash (Black), 25-4-4-4, tied for ninth after the quarterfinals, got into the final, thanks to a second round win and a second place finish in the semifinal.

Left out by the tie-breaker was Boc’s Snow Bird, who collected his 36 points on two seconds and two thirds.

Brucester (Black), who had a win and got a second in the semifinal, found himself a point short at 35.

The championship race is set for Saturday, May 24.
