With a “ya, baby,” Hardison Kennel trainer Darren Flahive pumped his fist into the air after drawing the eight box for SH Avatar during the Wednesday, Oct. 31, Post Position Show for the $500,000 Iowa Breeders Classic at Bluffs Run.

“I wanted the seven or eight,” said Flahive. “I just hope I don’t screw him up.”

The draw will probably make SH Avatar, 39-18-5-7, the favorite when the morning line comes out. The May 13, 2010 71-pounder out of Kiowa Mon Manny-Tom S Caterwaul dominated the early qualifying rounds of the IBC with three straight wins, including a first-round win out of the eight box. Throw out his semifinal effort, a sixth that was filled with plenty of trouble.

If SH Avatar got what he wanted in a starting box, the top qualifiers were not as fortunate.

Top Of The Pile would have preferred “an outside box,” said Plum Creek trainer Monte Hoopes. But Hoopes, drawing first in the Show, got the two box.

“If he breaks,” said Hoopes, “he will be okay.”

However, the Nov. 2, 2010, 75-pounder out of Cayman Went-Metallica won in the qualifiers from the four, six and seven boxes, but was fourth out of the three. Top Of The Pile takes a 28-11-3-1 record into the final.

Killer Buddie, the youngest greyhound in the field, also “likes the outside,” said Harlan Brothers assistant trainer Joe Bloom. “He is more comfortable there.” But Buddie drew the four.

“If he stays out of trouble,” said Bloom, “and gets to the first turn, he can win the race.” Killer Buddie has a 19-8-2-3 record.

Sitting in the one box will be L’s Fray. In the 27 years of the Iowa Breeders Classic, only 17 greyhounds have made two appearances in the Classic and L’s Fray is one of them. “I like the one for her,” said Boeckenstedt trainer Chuck Shelton, who drew the box for the Dec. 16, 2009 66-pounder out of Super Lee-Fast Frieda. “If she goes to the front, they have to catch her. I think she can be helped because I believe the two (Top Of The Pile) bores out a bit.”

L’s Fray, 42-15-6-6, impressed with her semifinal win. However, she can be a little short against the stronger fields at Bluffs Run.

The Harlan Brothers other entry, Killer Dare, is having quite a year. The Oct. 16, 2010 81-pounder out of Gable Dodge-Slatex Sarah Liz already has fourth-place finishes in the $60,000 Juvenile Stakes and $60,000 Bluffs Run Open.

Wanting an outside box, Bloom drew the three box for Killer Dare. That might be good luck; more champions (six) have come out of the three than any other box in the IBC’s history.

“It all comes down to Killer Dare staying out of trouble,” said Bloom. “I don’t like having our two entries next to each other in the boxes.”

Killer Dare bring a 39-14-6-9 record into the final.

Jet Force is the second Hardison entry and returns to the IBC after finishing second in the Classic last year. The April 22, 2009 61-pounder out of Kelsos Fusileer-All Embracing will be chasing history. A victory will make Jet Force the oldest greyhound to win the IBC. The 1989 champion, AC Gallant Nathe, currently holds that honor at three years, three months old.

Jet Force may face an uphill climb. Her two qualifying wins came in the first two rounds. Jet Force, 49-14-11-4, drew the six box.

Plum Creek’s second entry, Pearls Of Wisdom, drew the five box. A win for Pearls of Wisdom will make history. No greyhound has won out of the five in the previous 26 IBCs. But the April 24, 2009 68-pounder out of Dodgem By Design-Complete Picture won out of five the last two times he started in that box, one by six lengths.

Pearls of Wisdom enters the final with a 44-6-7-9 record.

The last to draw for a box in the Post Position Show was LK’s Starbeam and he was left with the seven box.

“Actually,” said Legg Kennel trainer Crystal Reuer, “the seven would be great. We think he would do well in a tough race.”

The June 17, 2010 65-pounder out of Kiowa Mon Manny-Jack’s Goddess had a nice five-length win in the quarterfinals out of the six box. Starbeam brings a 41-10-3-3 record into the final.

Taking about some numbers, the field has two females and six males. The previous IBCs have been won by 17 males and nine females. This year’s purse sends the total purse in IBC finals over the $7 million mark to $7,125,000.

The 27th running of the $500,000 Iowa Breeders Classic will be held Saturday, Nov. 3. The race will be the 15th and final race on the program.
