Greyhound Racing TELL ME ABOUT IT

In a field complete with stakes champions, Tell Me About It (Plum Creek) picked up his own trophy, winning the $60,000 Bluffs Run Open by four and a half lengths Saturday, July 28.

“Tell’s been blossoming his last five starts,” said trainer Monte Hoopes. “He likes an outside box (Tell Me About It drew the eight box), but we felt the one (Plum Creek’s Programable) had the better shot.”

It was JD Pandemonium (Mickim), out of the two box, which got the early lead in the frontstretch. Pandemonium, who likes to run wide, took advantage of an open three box (more on that later).

Tell Me About It and Juvenile Stakes champion Manny Walker (Hardison), from the seven box, overtook Pandemonium and started a two-greyhound battle for the lead as the field rounded the first turn.

Manny Walker, working the rail, grabbed a length’s lead over Tell Me About It as the pair ran the backstretch. Entering the far turn, Tell Me About It found another gear and passed Manny Walker with authority.

“We felt,” said Hoopes, “that the seven could be short and we were glad to see our greyhound get on the outside of him.”

Once in front, Tell Me About It, 24-6-6-4, put on a show, stretching a length’s lead into the final margin in the homestretch. He won with a time of 30.75 for the 5/16-mile distance.

“In these last races,” said Hoopes, “he has benefited from getting outside holes and he has gotten around the first turn without trouble.”

Making a good homestretch rush from fifth to take second was the reigning Iowa Breeders Classic champion Angel Tree (Black), 31-14-4-7.

“We’re not disappointed,” said trainer John Filipelli. “She had no room and did a good job of circling the greyhounds she did. She ran a hell of a race.”

Not yet three years old, Angel Tree, the only female in the Open final “will be back to try for another IBC title (later this year),” said Filipelli.

Plum Creek’s Programable, 30-13-1-4, gave the kennel another good pay day with a third, six lengths back. He dipped to fourth after taking the early lead, then rallied to run third for most of the race.

Killer Dare (Harlan Brothers), 22-8-4-4, rallied nicely in the homestretch from seventh to take fourth, six and a half lengths back.

Tell Me About It collected $30,000 for the win with $15,000 going for second, $6,000 for third and $3,000 for fourth. The other finalists each won $1,500.

JD Pandemonium (Mickim), 34-12-7-2, faded slightly in the homestretch to finish fifth, eight lengths back. That was just ahead of Manny Walker, 37-14-10-2, who dropped off badly from second to end up sixth.

Barts Leothelion (Bartley Corporation), 36-9-8-6, entered the final as the top point earner from the four qualifying rounds. He broke sixth but dropped back to seventh and finished there, 11 and half lengths out.

Missing from the final was Bracket Challenge champion Chasin The Richs (Bean & Stout), 32-15-6-3. Chasin was injured during a workout on Wednesday and finally had to be scratched hours before the race Saturday.

“It might have been different,” mused Hoopes, “if we had been chasing the three (Chasin The Richs) instead of the seven.”

But might have beens aren’t actual parts of a race.

“There’s an old saying,” said Hoopes, “you have to be good to be in it and lucky to win it.”
