Darrell Lee Freese, 71, of Amana, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice of Mercy in Hiawatha after a long illness. Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, at Clover Ridge United Methodist Church, Walford, by Pastor Mike Townsley. Burial: Shiloh Cemetery. Hiawatha. Military honors will be presented by American Legion Pekomy Post 572 of Fairfax. Friends may visit Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. and after noon Tuesday at the church. Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, is serving the family.

Darrell is survived by three brothers, Jim (Ruth) Freese of Springville, Roger (Theresa) Brimmer of East Dubuque, Ill., and Steven Brimmer of Galena, Ill.; a sister, Sharon (Chuck) Mote of Phoenix, Ariz.; niece, Becky (Tony) Clark, and nephew, Bryan Freese, both of Cedar Rapids; friends, William Lockhart and Susan, Micky Lockhart, Robert Lockhart and Susan, and William and Robert Lockhart, all of Amana; many more nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins; and his faithful Jack Russell terrier companion, Albert.

Darrell was preceded in death by his father, Elwood Freese; mother, Pauline Brimmer; stepfather, Alfred Brimmer; sister, Patricia Wise; and brother, Terry Brimmer.

Darrell Lee Freese was born Aug. 24, 1939, in Toddville, son of Elwood Freese and Pauline Brimmer. He worked for the City of Cedar Rapids Street Department as office manager.

Darrell loved dogs, especially Greyhounds, which he raised and enjoyed attending dog races. Darrell raised more National Greyhound champions than anyone else. He felt one of his great joys and accomplishments was raising a Greyhound to retirement age and making sure it was adopted into a good home.
