Greyhound Racing PADDY O'PRADO BEST IN VIRGINIA DERBY

Paddy O'Prado flaunted his superiority when bursting through a couple of tight spots and drawing off to victory Saturday in the 14th running of the Grade 2, $600,000 Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs in New Kent, Va.

With Kent Desormeaux aboard for trainer Dale Romans, Paddy O'Prado lagged well back early before shooting through a rail opening and then boldly splitting rivals in the final turn of the 1 1/4-mile turf race. The colt then just kept rolling up the rail, prevailing with style by 1 1/2 lengths over Interactif.
"That was great," Romans said. "This horse just keeps getting better and better. He's doing so good on the grass, I couldn't think of taking him off it for now."
Paddy O'Prado, the heavy favorite in a field of seven 3-year-olds, returned $3.20 to win after finishing in 2:02.58 over a firm course. A Kentucky-bred gray colt by El Prado, Paddy O'Prado is owned by the Donegal Racing partnership managed by Iowa attorney Jerry Crawford.
Interactif, the 3-1 second choice, got past front-running Two Notch Road in the final furlong to take second by 1 1/2 lengths over Krypton. Stately Victor, the 9-2 third choice, was never a factor when fifth.
Paddy O'Prado was winning a graded turf race for the third time. He sandwiched wins in the Palm Beach and Colonial Cup around a second in the Blue Grass Stakes, a third in the Kentucky Derby, and a sixth in the Preakness. He earned $352,800 on Saturday to lift his bankroll to $1,101,297.
Romans said Paddy O'Prado will run next in the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes on the Aug. 21 Arlington Million undercard at Arlington Park.
The Virginia Derby anchored the biggest day of the year at Colonial, with four other stakes being run earlier on a 14-race card.
