    Greyhound Racing ON THE HOMEFRONT

    By retired racer Giddy Pepper

Boy, I thought retirement would be my time to relax!  No sooner had I settled in with my new people here in Des Moines than the Iowa Greyhound Association asked me to write a column.  Well, I am never too busy to take time out of my busy nap schedule to reconnect with old friends and fans.

For those of you who don’t know me, my full name is Giddy Pepper.  You can call me Pepper.  I am a former racer who retired at age three for a career change: motherhood.  I lived in Dubuque for almost seven years and I have been married six times by five different husbands.  I have thirty-nine pups that I love dearly; almost all of them are in the family business of racing at tracks around the country.  With my youngest batch off to racing college last year, empty nest syndrome set in big time.  I missed the ear-chewing, yipping, and pitter-patter of dozens of little feet.  So I decided to adopt a family.

The decision to adopt was easy; humans are for the most part very loveable and relatively easy to train.  After taking an eight week training course with Heartland Greyhound Adoption, I got the call that every greyhound can hardly wait to get.  There was a family in Des Moines in desperate need of my services.  This family of four was just what I was looking for.  There are two puppy people, their parents, and a guinea pig under my tutelage.  The parents are sort of stubborn, but I am training them well.  Their house has a big yard for me to give them exercise, and I take them out for walks every day.  For some reason the youngest puppy person won’t let me play with his guinea pig, though.  I don’t see why.  It is pure white and I’ll bet it would be lots of fun to chase!

Taking care of people has been rewarding, but there have been a few problems.  We had a few discussions about whose bed is whose, and we finally came to an agreement.  If they stay out of my kennel & off my pillow, I won’t retaliate and nap on their couch or on their beds.  Also, I had no idea that people like such regimented meals.  I should be able to grab a loaf of bread or a bag of meaty-treaties to take to my kennel for whenever I want a snack, but apparently this isn’t the case.  They also eat a lot of weird green stuff, some of which smells good, but I would rather nap in my kennel than hang around their people dishes waiting for a sample.  Fortunately, the humans know my fondness of lamb and rice and treat me to plain yogurt for dessert every night.

I must say, I thought I would be bored in my retirement years, but my new family keeps me happier than I ever dreamed possible.  I am also happy that the IGA is interested in my observations on life after the track.  Who knows, maybe I’ll write again sometime.
