Dragon Fire tops All-Bluffs Run team
In the quick-changing world of greyhound racing, what happened early in the year is sometimes forgotten.

Not so this year at Bluffs Run.

Dragon Fire's early successes withstood late challenges and earned him Greyhound of the Year laurels on The Daily Nonpareil's All-Bluffs Run team.

Dragon Fire (Keeper-Red Rock Kennel), out of Brett Lee-Hoops Slamdunk, leads the track in victories with 27. Just as impr essive is his work in the early stakes series. He made the finals in the Spring Futurity, Horseshoe Challenge and Survivor Series. The latter is a grueling test that favors greyhounds that run the 3/8-mile a bit better than the 5/16-mile route that was Fire's usual race.

    Overall, Dragon Fire is 49-27-7-2.

Thisbee's Gotyou (Neal Black Kennel) is the oldest greyhound on the team. The 3 1/2-year-old out of Flying Penske-Eltex Bee is second in victories with 24. The 73-pound was a finalist in the Horseshoe Challenge and a semifinalist in the Survivor Series. A good money greyhound, Gotyou finished on the board 43 times in 57 starts.
Gert's Shyster (Bryon Legg Kennel) won the Survivor Series and was second in the Spring Futurity. The 69-pounder out of TNT Star Wars-Kl's Gert found his way to the money, he was third in earnings at $91,000-plus. A greyhound earns the kennel money with a top four finish. Gert collected a paycheck 51 times in 64 starts.

Flame's Nash (Bryon Legg Kennel) took home the biggest paycheck by winning the $425,000 Iowa Breeders Classic last month. But he served notice by making the final of the Fall Futurity. Nash is the youngest on the team, just past his second birthday and a bit small (63 pounds) as males go. With 27 money-finishes in 36 starts, the son of TV Chris Again-GS Flame sets up well for 2007.

BL Whiplash (Woodall Kennel) won half his 38 starts, good for a tie for fourth at the track. He was a finalist in the Fall Futurity. Another youngster, the 67-pounder out of Larking About-Glory Ember is just two months past his second birthday.

Boc's Capncrunch (Boeckenstedt Kennel) had a steady season with 18 wins. The 77-pounder out of the Dominator-Contradiction had 39 money-finishers in 61 starts while earning more than $51,000.

Rompin Romeo (Boeckenstedt Kennel) won the 3/8-Mile Derby and was a finalist in the Iowa Breeders Classic, pushing him to fourth on the earnings list at nearly $85,000. The 78-pounder out of Dk's Prime Time-Og Carrie is the only member of the team that focuses mostly on the 3/8-mile races.

Accomplished (Plum Creek) is third in victories with 21 and second in earning with $161,000-plus. A runner-up in the Iowa Breeders Classic, Accomplished is the lone female on the team. The 64-pounder out of Craigie Whistler-Lonely Wind had 43 money finishes in 58 starts.

Plum Creek's Brownlee trainer of the year

Ray Brownlee, in casual conversation, is quick with a good quip. But the veteran Bluffs Run trainer is also quick to avoid the spotlight.

He can't dodge this one, however, as he is the trainer of the year.

Under Brownlee's direction, the Plum Creek Kennel leads Bluffs Run in wins (441 with a couple of days left in the year) and earnings ($1, 131,733). That's 50 more wins than any rival and roughly $370,000 more than any kennel.

Brownlee quickly backs off from the credit.

"They gave me the go-cart," said Brownlee, "and told me to steer it down the hill."

It is a team operation, explained Brownlee, a bit more seriously.

"I have three owners, Mark and John Phelan and David Robinette," said Brownlee, "who keep sending me good greyhounds. That's the backbone of our success. (Assistant trainer) Amy Rice has helped a lot."

In the kennel, "you work the greyhounds hard," said Brownlee, "and keep them in the best condition."

Brownlee has been at Bluffs Run for seven years and in the business for 35 years. He grew up in Colorado "about one block from the track," said Brownlee. "The lights at the track drew me there, too bad it wasn't Hollywood."

Brownlee got into the business early on, helping his older brothers as a kid. He got his trainer's license before his 16th birthday, becoming the youngest trainer in the state.

Brownlee won the Spring Futurity with Untold Talent. His headliner this year is All-Bluffs Run team selection Accomplished who was "a pleasant surprised. She improved a lot."

Brownlee likes one of his pups coming up, Action In Motion.

"We've got a lot of nice young ones," said Brownlee, "but that's been our key, we've been having good pups coming in all year."
