Gert's Shyster overpowers Dragon Fire in Survivor Series final.

Gert's Shyster put on a show in winning Tuesday's final of the $60,000 Survivor Series at Bluffs Run.

Shyster spotted Dragon Fire a five-length lead in the 5/16-mile race, then put on a powerful run to win by five lengths.

Dragon Fire took command out of three box and controlled the final through the backstretch. But when the greyhounds reached the end of the backstretch, Shyster closed quickly.

"We knew Dragon Fire always goes to the front," said Tracy McMillin, trainer for the Bryon Legg Kennel. "Gert's Shyster does comes off the pace, he's never been in the front."

If there was worry in the Shyster corner, it went away "at the 3/8 (mile) boxes (at the end of the backstretch), we knew we could catch him them."

There was a lot of confidence about Gert's Shyster's chances.

"Our concern," said McMillin, "was when the Survivor Series was down to four and five greyhounds. Then it is easy to be bumped and finish last. When we got past that and got down to three, I was confident."

Dragon Fire has had a great season at Bluffs Run. The track has had three stakes series and the greyhound has made the final for all three. But Tuesday's second means no big cigar for the third time.

Tuesday's track, listed as fast, was a bit off, as some observers noted. That didn't help Dragon Fire.

"Dragon Fire needed a fast track," said Tommy Jones of the Keeper-Red Rock Kennel. "In the end, the greyhound with the bottom got him and our greyhound just got beat."

In handing out the trophy, Bluffs Run announced this is the final Survivor Series. The track's 2007 stakes schedules will replace the format with another stakes race.
