The first annual Iowa Greyhound Association Auction was a success.  In total, $116,595.90 was spent on 49 dogs, 13 stud services, and a handful of greyhound relatedequipment.  Individuals from across the country participated in the auction, including Kansas, Texas, Oregon, Massachusetts, Nebraska, Florida, New York,Oklahoma,Missouri, and of course, Iowa.

The IGA was honored to have Ryan Mahan & Associates conduct the auction.  Ryan Mahan, as senior auctioneer for the Keeneland Sales Company in Lexington, Kentucky, is responsible for the leading thoroughbred sale in the world. Mahan was accompanied by Kurt Becker, track announcer at Keeneland and the radio voice of NASCAR, and two bid spotters.
As a direct result of the auction Alan Hill, an Iowa breeder and IGA Board Member, was interviewed by a reporter with the Associated Press about the Iowa greyhound breeding industry.  The resulting article has been published in newspapers around the country.  Among the cities in which the story ran were newspapers in Denver, Colorado; Washington D.C.; Houston, Texas; Seattle, Washington; and Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  To date, more than 20 newspapers have ran the story nationwide.  Portions of the article were also published on the ESPN and Sports Illustrated websites.  It is hard to remember the last time the greyhound industry received such positive press on a national level!

&nbs p;    The IGA Board of Directors has already begun planning next year’s auction, which will likely once again be held at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, but will likely occur on a different date.  We are extremely encouraged by the success we were able to accomplish this year, and hope to build on this success with future auctions.  Lastly, we want to thank everyone who participated in this year’s auction.  Without your help the IGA could never have accomplished such a positive result.
