About a year ago, David Robinette of Elliott and Bryon Legg of Griswold donated half interest in two champion greyhounds to Cole Jipsen, a 6-year-old Griswold boy with leukemia.Half of the race winnings generated by Jipsen's Dream and Speedy Blue go toward helping the Jipsen family with medical and travel expenses associated with Cole's illness. At this point, the dogs have earned $34,000 for Cole, whose cancer recently returned after being in remission.

The young boy is returning to Children's Hospital in Omaha for more chemotherapy as his body prepares for a hoped-for bone marrow transplant. Cole is getting local help with that, too.
When the call went out a few weeks ago for a bone marrow donor, 101 Griswold residents offered to donate. About 50 have been eliminated, but the search for a match continues. According to Cole's father, Kevin, they have identified several potential donors nationwide.

Today, Robinette and Legg, along with most of the Griswold community, are planning to help Cole and his family in another way.

This Saturday, Griswold is holding a fundraiser, a Soup and Chili Feed for Cole, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Griswold Community Building. There is no cost at the door, all freewill donations.

Organizers said area churches from Lewis to Elliott and every town in between are donating the soup, some 50 to 60 gallons of it. Participants will select their favorite by donating dollars. The soup with the most money wins.

Organizers hope to draw between 300 and 500 people and raise at least $1,500. Thrivent, a Lutheran insurance company, is matching up to $800, and the Masonic Lodge is pitching in to help collect donations.

The Griswold Jazz Band will play at the event; and Dr. Elaine Barry, a rural southwest Iowa family doctor, will be on hand to provide information about leukemia. Organizers said they hope to know by Saturday whether a bone marrow donor for Cole has been identified.

Robinette said he is proud of his fellow southwest Iowans.

"This is what we're supposed to do for each other when we live as a community," he said.
"We're supposed to help each other and care."

He is optimistic people will come through for Cole.

"If two dogs can raise $34,000, imagine what people can do."
