Gimme Dat Ding had just enough left at the wire to hold off a hard-charging Marias John to win the $86,000 3/8-Mile Derby by a nose Saturday evening at Bluffs Run.

"I got nervous at the finish," said Bryon Legg trainer Tracy McMillin. "Seven (Marias John) made a heck of a run, but our greyhound had just enough"

Gimme Dat Ding broke second but quick took charge in the short run around the far turn to the first trip down the homestretch. The 61-pounder broke away from the field to build leads of upwards of five lengths in the early going.

"She had to get to the front," said McMillin, "that's her race. In some ways, she's all or nothing."

Leading the chase was State of Red, the betting favorite. When Unbottled because a late scratch (injured toe), the door appeared open for Red. State of Red did break on top from the one box, but did not take advantage of the space allowed by the now open two box.

Still, Red stalked Ding throughout the backstretch.

Meanwhile, Marias John was trying to make up ground, but was having an adventure doing it. Fourth early, John was squeezed along the rail when he tried to pass entering the backstret ch.

Forced to shuffled back, John rallied only to run into a bump with Kelsos Battlecry in the far turn.

John finally got past Kelsos, but swung wide into the mid track as the field moved into the homestretch. John sliced back toward the rail and sliced between Gimme Dat Ding and State of Red in the charge for the wire.

Marias John got second as State of Red settled for third, just a neck off the pace.

"(The trouble) could have made a difference," said Christy Baird, assistant trainer for the Bean & Stout Kennel that handles Marias John. "But we're proud of him. He was the youngest pup in the race, he ran hard and ran a good race."

Rtodtoo finished fourth, one and 1/2 lengths back. But the pup was not a serious contender in the stretch.

I'm A Shamu Too rallied in the homestretch to take fifth, three lengths off the pace.

Kelsos Battlecry was sixth, six back and one length ahead of Allsystemsengage.
