THE BLUFFS RUN $300,000 OPEN WAS A LONG PHOTO, BUT THE WINNER WAS. WTD COUNTRY GOLD

Gold is a 76 pound brindle male out of Gable Chevy-ML Taffy Crunch owned by BILL DAVIDSON

"This was wonderful," said Davidson. "We didn't think he could come from the outside, so when he stayed on the rail, we knew he had the finish to win it."

But not without all the high drama of the down-to-the-wire ending.

I'm Already Gone popped the eight box and took charge from the outset of the 5/16-mile test. The 61-pounder out of the Neal Blake Kennel, one of just two females in the final field, led throughout while WTD Country Gold came on to challenge as the field entered the backstretch.

The margin was never more than a length as the pair rounded the far turn. But coming into the homestretch, I'm Already Gone blew the turn and swung wide into the middle of the track.

"That is not usually what she will do in a race," said trainer Linda Willey, "but I didn't see anything in her running to suggest she was having any trouble."

The giving of ground opened the door for WTD Country Gold who took the lead at the top of the homestretch. But I'm Already Gone sliced back toward the rail and closed, setting up the picture finish.

"Eight (I'm Already Gone) had a lot of finish," admitted Davidson.

The victory gave the Open to the "outsiders." When the $300,000 event was announced, initial interes t came from 15 tracks around the nation. The championship field featured four greyhounds from Bluffs Run and four guests. WTD Country Gold had been running at Palm Beach, Fla.

"I sent him up," said Davidson, "because he was my best. He started in the 5/16 and when we tried him in the 3/8-mile, he stopped breaking in the 5/16 races. We are going to keep him here and let him take a shot at the 3/8-Mile Derby."

The championship proved a two-greyhound race.

Js Im Seein Red broke seventh, was cutoff early, then rallied to take third, but finished six length off the pace. He was not a factor.

Team Record was third early but out finished and settled for fourth, seven lengths back.

Lewis And Wax, the second favorite behind Js Im Seein Red, was haunted by his own inability to break sharply. Coming out of the five box, Lewis And Wax was in early traffic and was never a factor in finishing fifth, eight back.

Igoby Brady, the third favorite, also ran into early troubles. He finished sixth, 11 back.

On The Run Again was seventh, 12 back, just ahead of Jj Guinevere.
